Microsoft Vista = Bad

January 30, 2007 by Brian

Microsoft released Vista yesterday in Times Square with a whole lot of fanfare. Vista attempts to embed DRM (or digital rights management) into the basic operating system. DRM is bad on all sorts of levels, as is locks digital media (movies, music, pictures, etc) by overreaching licensing technology, ignoring the freedom people have to their property.

For instance, imagine if you bought a DVD copy of Short Bus, but could only play it once, or on only one particular DVD player…craziness. An even bigger problem is DRM could prevent future historians and librarians from accessing information. It is just a bad idea. Many artists also hate DRM (like these Canadian ones), as they prevent the adoption of their work, and really just benefit the distributors.

So, enough about DRM (for now). Just don’t purchase Microsoft Vista. Instead find a nice distribution of Linux (like Ubuntu), BSD (like PC-BSD) or even buy a Mac. Or at the very least, throw away Internet Explorer and install Mozilla Firefox.

  2. Thanks for giving me the review cause I hadn’t heard too much about it, but I was kind of wondering. It sounds like a bunch of crap. I’ve never tried Linux or Mozilla or any of that shizz. I think I am scared to mess with what I’ve got. I’ll have to look into it though.
