a moment of serious
May 21, 2007 by Sarah
a few weeks ago i was alerted to a newspaper article (i can’t remember the source) about two vegan parents who had starved their child to death while attempting to adhere to a vegan diet. bullshit. it’s not the veganism that killed the baby, it’s the parents stupidity. there are numerous books, websites, etc. that can help new parents raise their children vegan and healthy and there are many, many health vegan people and babies (proof) who can work as resources too. i find this story, and the resulting attack on veganism, to be terrible, misinformed, and, mostly, really, really, disturbing.

You know the media loves their tsk tsk stories and that is definately one of them. Vegans are easily attacked since they are not your red blooded American norm supporting the meat industry and the dairy industry which are the old folks staples so they make for a good target for these kinds of tragedy stories. Way to make the ignorant think they have an argument by using some idiot parents as the example of Veganism. Fine to run the story of course, but the bullshit that the ones that do it properly have to face because of it is unjustified. Try living in farmland like I do and then telling people you don’t eat red meat. At family gatherings you feel like you are saying that you like to be peed on or something by the looks you get. This kind of stuff just feeds their misinformed minds.

I heard about that story too. That is such a shame because meat eaters strave and kill their babies too, but it is never blamed on the diet itself.
On a side note - what is the vegan stance on breast milk? I would think that is normal part of life and yes coming from an animal - but it’s the mother…

as far as i know breast milk is fine, and preferred. i guess some people, for various reasons not relating to veganism, just can’t do that though. i really like your point about omni’s starving there babies, it’s so true, it happens all the time but it’s never used as a headline.

The reason this became such a story is they used veganism as their defense in court. I imagine their lawyer was trying to leverage precedence set by Jehovah’s Witnesses’ refusal for blood transfusions.

Interesting legal concept. But were the lawyers doorknobs? God told me to not harm any animal so i will starve my own child and harm my own child in not hurting animals…I just don’t get the logic. I’m glad they were found guilty, but why give veganisma bad name? The whole purpose of the movement is to better the earth and living conditions for the creatures that inhabit the earth. Not kill them…?! Those lawyers just set the whole movement back. Booh!

i guess they thought it was a good excuse to hide behind. i don’t really think that anyone cares that much about the veganism movement and there’s enough misunderstanding surrounding it for it to be a viable defense (”aww, poor stupid vegans, don’t know what they’re doing!”) and one responsible for their loss (”vegans are so stupid! lock them up, throw away the key! kill all vegans!”). i’ve heard there were a lot of factors at play that the press didn’t report so i think that the whole “we’re vegans” thing was just a veil to hide the real goings on.
